Agri’s Top Autumnal Produce Picks

Wonderful fruits and vegetables are grown year-round, but no other season can compare to the harvests of fall. Our warehouse is already stacked high with autumnal favorites such as eggplant, brussels sprouts, plums, and carrots. During the colorful fall months, vibrant produce can also be a way for you to brighten up your restaurant. Use our pumpkins, squash, gourds, and hay barrels as seasonal decor to get diners in the festive spirit. Let us tell you about some of our favorites of the season and how to utilize them for your menu.

Pumpkin and Squash

Pumpkin and squash varieties are the stars of the fall season. While you may be familiar with classic dishes like warm soups, pastas, and of course, pumpkin pie, there’s so much more you can make with these two ingredients: squash fritters, pumpkin hummus, and squash and pumpkin salsa are just a few of the unexpected recipes you can experiment with this season.

Pears

Pears such as Bartlett, Bosc, and Anjou are the perfect choice for fall appetizers, desserts, and cocktails. Pears pair perfectly with so many different ingredients — onions, brie, arugula, nuts, and more. This year, try combining pears with unexpected options like cloves and ginger to make inventive recipes like spiced pear chutney.

Pomegranates

Pomegranates are an excellent choice for the fall season, bursting with a burst of vibrant flavor and health benefits. As the leaves begin to turn red, reach for this bright crimson fruit that’s rich with antioxidants and vitamin C. Their juicy seeds (also known as arils) are perfect for sprinkling on salads, but they can also add powerful zesty flavor to charcuterie boards, pasta dishes, and hearty sauces such as pesto.

Figs

Figs are a perfect fall treat, with a sweet, intriguing flavor that feels right at home during the season of autumn. Whether you prefer to use fresh or dried figs, they make a versatile addition to both sweet and savory dishes. They can be used as the perfect complement to a goat cheese and prosciutto appetizer, diced and added to grain bowls for an unexpected sweet touch, or used as part of a creamy jam that your diners are sure to love.

Rutabaga

Rutabagas are often confused with turnips due to their purplish color, but rutabagas tend to be much sweeter and milder than turnips. This makes this root vegetable a great option for a new twist on traditional dishes like mashed potatoes. They also taste delicious when caramelized to a deep brown color, and add a savory sweetness to stews and soups. They can even be eaten on their own as a side! While turnips are delicious, if you’re ready to try something new this year, look no further.

Cauliflower

Once overlooked as broccoli’s blander cousin, cauliflower has recently become a staple item on menus across the country. It’s a versatile vegetable that easily holds different flavors, making it a blank canvas for a chef’s imagination. Whether you roast it, fry it, turn it into pizza crust, or slice it thickly and serve it as a vegan entree, cauliflower is a great option for diet-restricted diners, and for anyone who appreciates a veggie that can do it all.
