Winter Seasonal Produce

Winter is a time when most people believe that fresh fruits and vegetables can no longer be found, but farmers and chefs know differently. Most of the produce comes from places that maintain a warmer climate such as the southern United States, South America and tropical islands, so there’s still plenty to harvest!

Root Vegetables

Root vegetables are hearty and fight to survive cooler temperatures and hard earth. Carrots, potatoes, beets and turnips are just a few that thrive in this environment. That’s what makes them perfect for equally hearty and comforting meals, such as soups and stews that help people survive the long, cold winters.

Dark Leafy Greens and Cruciferous Vegetables

Kale, cabbage, Belgian endive, Brussels sprouts and broccoli maintain a fresh, green appearance in the winter despite green being better associated with springtime. They’re often perfect for roasting or using in winter salads alongside winter fruit.

Citrus

Citrus fruits are still easy to acquire in the winter from tropical locations. Grapefruit, clementines, mandarin oranges, tangerines and Meyer lemon can add a zesty touch to desserts and drinks. A little acidity is always necessary to cut through the heavier, earthier flavors that winter provides.

Winter Fruit

If citrus isn’t for you, though, there are plenty of other winter fruits available! Pomegranates and red currants bring a pop of tartness and color that match the holiday season. Pears and dates provide mellower flavors and more versatility with the desserts they lend themselves to such as tarts and puddings.

You can still create beautiful and fresh winter seasonal menus with fruits and vegetables that are in supply this time of year! Make warm, vibrant dishes that take your customers and guests out of their winter gloom. Don’t miss out on what’s fresh this season, and don’t forget to ask your Agri sales representative about our seasonal specials!
